Dobies: 5 Fun Facts

  1. Mix of Many Breeds. Dobies are thought to be a mix of a wide variety of dogs, including the Great Dane, Rottweiler, German Shorthaired Pointer, Weimaraner, Greyhound, Manchester Terrier, and more.
  2. Named After Person. Dobies are named after Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann who is thought to be the first breeder of Dobermans. He was a German tax collector in the 1890s — who also worked as a police officer, night guard, and dog catcher.
  3. Bred to Be Guards. Dobies were originally bred to be personal guard dogs. Today Dobies are used for a variety of jobs and sports including police work, scent tracking, coursing, diving, search and rescue, therapy, and guiding the blind.
  4. Dobies Make Great Soldiers. In 1944 a Doberman named Kurt saved 250 US Marines on Guam when he alerted the troops to Japanese soldiers.
  5. 5th Smartest Breed. Dobermans are the fifth smartest breed (after the Border Collie, Poodle, German Shepherd and Golden Retriever). This makes them easy to train, but also means they can get easily bored. Exercise and training are very important for Dobies.
